GetOurRoots is a small, early-stage service. This page explains — in plain language — what we collect, what we do with it, and the terms you agree to by using the site.

What we collect

• Search details you submit — the name, state, and approximate years of the deceased relative you look up.
• Your email address — when you run a free lookup or reserve a spot on the founding list.
• Family tree content — names, dates, stories, and photos that you or people you invite add to a tree.
• Technical logs — your IP address (used to rate-limit free lookups), the page you arrived on, the site that referred you, campaign tags in the link you clicked, and a random identifier stored in your browser so we can count visitors without using advertising cookies.

We do not use third-party advertising cookies or tracking pixels on this site.

How we use it

• To run your lookup and show or send you the results.
• To contact you about your reservation when onboarding opens.
• To understand how people use the site (visit counts, where visitors come from) so we can improve it.

We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers or data brokers, and we won't email you marketing you didn't ask for.

AI processing

Lookups are performed by an AI research assistant (Anthropic's Claude). The search details you submit are sent to Anthropic's API to run the search. They are processed under Anthropic's commercial terms, which do not permit training on API data.

Service providers

We use Anthropic (AI processing, as above) and Fly.io (hosting). Data you submit is stored on our Fly.io servers in the United States.

About living people

GetOurRoots is for researching the deceased. Please don't submit search requests about living people. Tree pages you create may include living relatives only with their knowledge; we recommend keeping details about living people minimal.

Deletion

Email us (address below) and we'll delete your email, lookup history, and any tree you own.

Terms of use

• The free lookup is a best-effort preview of public records. We can't guarantee records exist for any given person, and results may contain errors — verify anything important against the cited source.
• Free lookups are limited (currently 3 per day) and may be changed or paused at any time while we're in early access.
• When paid research launches: if a full research run finds nothing beyond what you told us, you get a full refund.
• Don't use the service to harass, stalk, or investigate living people, or for any unlawful purpose.
• The service is provided "as is," without warranties; our total liability is limited to the amount you've paid us.
